Experiencers Wanted
LETTER OF INTRODUCTION:
Dear Respondent,
Thank you for expressing an interest in my research concerning alien
abductions. My name is Stephanie Kelley and I am a graduate student at the
University of Kansas. I will be conducting a rhetorical analysis using
abduction narratives as my texts. Dr. Robert Rowland, professor in
Communication Studies, will be serving as my faculty supervisor.
The Department of Communication Studies at the University of Kansas
supports the practice of protection for human subjects participating in
research. The following information is provided for you to decide whether
you wish to participate in the present study. You should be aware that even
if you agree to participate, you are free to withdraw at any time.
Your participation is solicited, although strictly voluntary. I assure you
that your name will not be associated in any way with the research
findings. In order to assure anonymity, names and addresses will be
immediately removed from survey results. In the case of subjects submitting
their data via ground mail, neither names nor addresses need be included on
completed questionnaires. For subjects submitting via e-mail, e-mail
addresses will be immediately deleted from downloaded texts. Narrative
subject numbers will be assigned to completed questionnaires for
identification. All identifying information will be removed from all
completed and partial questionnaires before they are printed for analysis.
By participating, you affirm that you are at least 18 years of age.
Furthermore, your participation in this study acknowledges your consent to
have data (identified only by narrative subject number) appear in this
study and possibly subsequent publications.
Although you personally may not benefit from this study, it will increase
scholarship in the area and help us to understand the phenomenon. You
should also be advised that we anticipate no risks associated with this
study, or with your participation.
